As Tripoli's trash mountain piles higher and higher and threatens to tumble into a nearby river, the city is facing a pressing decision on where it will put its solid waste. The mountain, designed to reach 25 meters, is already 48 to 49 meters tall and is bursting at the seams.
On June 21, the city's mayor, MPs and other officials met to discuss solutions.
The site will take up a 60,000-square-meter area abutting the trash mountain and jutting out into the sea, according to documents prepared in April by consultancy Dar al-Handasah's Nazih Taleb and reviewed by The Daily Star.
Batco will build and operate the reclaimed site, according to Germanos and Tripoli Mayor Ahmad Qamareddine.
According to Mayor Qamareddine, that solution lies 15 minutes north of Tripoli in Deir Ammar.
If the long-term solution is not in Deir Ammar, where is it?
Jamali had been quoted after the June 21 meeting as saying Deir Ammar was part of the long-term solution, but insisted to The Daily Star that she had been misquoted.
