Starting in 2019, the Jbeil municipality will ban all use of plastic bags – a bold initiative to address the country's addiction to plastic that has garnered the praise of many environmental groups in Lebanon.Jbeil's decision is a message for all Lebanese residents to refuse single-use plastics, Jreissati added. In a widely circulated communique originally published Wednesday, Jbeil Mayor Wissam Zaarour ordered all business to drop single-use plastic bags, urging them to find environmentally friendly alternatives by the end of 2018 .With no recycling scheme included in Lebanon's already ineffective waste plan, the majority of single-use plastic products go straight to the country's landfills – many of which lie along Lebanon's coastline.
