Caretaker Foreign Minister Gebran Bassil's campaign against the U.N. refugee agency has embarrassed the Lebanese state and specifically Prime Minister-designate Saad Hariri, a source close to Hariri told The Daily Star Thursday.Despite criticism, Bassil continued with his efforts to encourage and speed up the return of Syrian refugees in Lebanon. The source close to Hariri said that Bassil should show leniency and flexibility in his measures and rhetoric against the UNHCR.The source said Hariri has already conveyed to Bassil his opposition to the measures taken against the UNHCR staff but the foreign minister proceeded with his plan regardless.Bassil has not taken such a measure, although he threatened to do so if the UNHCR persisted in its policy toward Syrian refugees in Lebanon.
