Speaker Nabih Berri Wednesday called on the Lebanese state to reassert its authority in the Bekaa Valley by ordering the Lebanese Army and security forces to crack down on criminals threatening the region. Berri's remarks followed a series of violent crimes in the area, particularly in Baalbeck-Hermel, which highlighted the perceived lax security situation there. Berri said the Bekaa was known for fighting colonialism and had joined south Lebanon in the resistance against Israel. In a news conference addressing the situation in the Bekaa, former General Security chief and Baalbeck-Hermel MP Jamil al-Sayyed also blasted the Army and the security forces for falling short on their duties in the area.
