The ongoing war of words between Tenders Department head Jean Aliyyeh and Central Inspection Bureau chief George Attieh is worsening as a result of political intervention, a high-ranking source at the Tenders Department said Friday. The source said the move was a response to nearly a year of pressure from the CIB, to which the Tenders Department is administratively subordinate. The law underpinning the CIB says it consists of the Tenders Department and the CIB itself. He said historical evidence shows that Tenders Department heads would ask for authorization from the head of CIB, which evidences a power dynamic similar to that between directors-general of ministries and their minister.Asked whether he agreed with the Tender Department's invalidation of the emergency electricity tender three times in a row, Attieh refused to answer, on the basis he did not want to make a media statement.
