Tensions between the Progressive Socialist Party and the Free Patriotic Movement boiled over this week when the FPM appeared to retaliate against the PSP for having changed the position of an FPM-affiliated employee. Last week, caretaker Education Minister Marwan Hamadeh, who is associated with the PSP, removed Hilda al-Khoury from her position as head of the ministry's official exams department. The moves prompted PSP head former MP Walid Joumblatt to strongly criticize the FPM and the way it has been handling various issues, particularly relating to the electricity sector. The FPM has taken these apparent escalatory measures despite the fact that in comments over the weekend to the PSP's media outlet Al-Anbaa online, Hamadeh brushed off any controversy.
