The head of the Supreme Disciplinary Board blasted rampant corruption among public-sector employees and called for half of them to be fired Tuesday. In an interview with local TV station Al-Manar, Judge Marwan Abboud explained that his board is responsible for conducting trials and holding corrupt employees accountable for transgressions such as taking bribes or stealing public money. So, the board has been unable to carry out its duties, even though its tasks are not affected by the delay in the Cabinet formation. He said citizens interact with corrupt employees on a daily basis, but that the CIB presents three to four cases a year and usually targets only small-time criminals. More specifically, Abboud complained about the Shura Council, which he says has the power to reverse his verdicts – and in many cases does so.
