Environment Minister Fadi Jreissati said Monday that the Burj Hammoud landfill must be expanded as a temporary solution to the country's ongoing waste crisis, during a tour of the Costa Brava landfill. As the neighboring Burj Hammoud and Jdeideh landfills are expected to reach capacity by July, Jreissati said his ministry plans to expand the Burj Hammoud landfill until a longer-term waste management solution is implemented. While Cabinet early last year decided to expand the Costa Brava landfill, giving it another three years of capacity, it did not endorse a similar proposal to expand the Burj Hammoud or Jdeideh landfills.
