BEIRUT: A fight at a wedding in Baalbeck’s Younin killed three people and wounded four others late Saturday night, the state-run National News Agency reported.
Around 1 a.m. Sunday, a fight broke out during a wedding joining the Amhaz and Nemr families, and later escalated into a gunfight, killing three people, including two brothers. The NNA identified the three by their initials, T.Z., Aa.Y. and his brother Aa.Y.
Four others were wounded, including another pair of brothers and one person with a critical head wound. The NNA identified the brothers as Aa.Z. and A.Z.; the person with the head wound as R.B.; and the other as M.A. All were transported to nearby hospitals.
The brawl started between members of Nemr and Zeaiter families, reportedly over a folk song.
The song was praising the traits of the families' members when the singer told one of the attendees, “This is not for you.”
The brawl then escalated between the singer and the attendees, resulting in the shooting.
After the shooting, tensions rose and shells were reportedly fired in Baalbeck's Sharawneh area. Television images showed at least three burnt-out cars.
The Lebanese Army was dispatched to the area to contain the situation.
Later in the day, the Army said in a statement that a soldier was wounded when a group shot at a patrol. The wounded soldier was transferred to a nearby hospital.
