Lebanese belly dancer in France under fire for sympathizing with Israel

BEIRUT: A Lebanese activist group has called for the country’s authorities to take action against a Lebanese belly dancer who performed on stage in France with an Israeli band.

“The Lebanese authorities and especially the judicial bodies should take action and hold Joanna Fakhri accountable and punish her,” the Association to Support a Law to Boycott Israel said in a statement Monday.

Last month a video emerged of Fakhri, who reportedly lives in France and holds French citizenship, performing onstage with Israeli heavy metal band Orphaned Land at Hellfest festival in southern France on June 19.

In the video, which prompted outcry on some corners of the Internet, Fakhri and the band’s lead singer, Kobi Farhi, join the Lebanese and Israeli flags. Farhi can be heard saying “This song is about peace.”

Several negative comments were left under a YouTube video of the performance. One user criticized Fakhri for “supporting a country stealing her countries resources.”

Several other commenters, however, praised her move. “What a nice scene for a change,” said one.

Tayyar.org, a news website affiliated with the Free Patriotic Movement, in July reported that the performance had sparked anger among the French-Lebanese community.

Lebanon is technically in a state of war with Israel and under Lebanese law it is a crime to have any dealings with the Jewish state.

In a blogpost purportedly quoting Fakhri last month, the 22-year-old dancer defended her decision.

“I wanted to take this opportunity so rare in history – witnessing on stage an Israeli group and a Lebanese dancer – to say that beyond the artistic exchange and our collaboration for the love of art, we were willing to make it a symbol of peace. And these two flags that we held as high as the fist can rise, transcends all these years of war and suffering.”

In their statement, the association called for the Lebanese public and the Arab world to take action. “It is important not to ignore what Fakhri did because it is considered a clear and frank attempt to normalize relations between the enemy and Lebanon, and remaining silent toward this case is a crime that is considered complicity.”

“We urge the Lebanese public opinion and the Arab world to take action to counter this aggression … in order not to turn this phenomenon into a precedent that can be repeated,” it added.

The exhortation to hate is always louder than the exhortation to love.

With news like this, doesn't it cause one to doubt if the Muslim world wants any peace with Israel? Based on recent history and the news reports, the rest of the world should certainly take heed and understand that this is sadly not the case.

Toufic August 02, 2011 07:19 AM

I just don't understand why there is so much hatred. Imagine what Lebanon and the Middle East would be like if everybody could just swallow their pride, come to reasonable agreements and forget all the rubbish. The Middle East has the potential to be one of the most beautiful destinations in the world: our culture, our food and our countries are second to none. Unfortunately, we are also so caught up with hating Israel that we can never prosper to our full potential. Well done Joanna, what you did is a great example for what we all should be doing, and we should ignore all the power tripping, crazy-minded people who would prefer war than peace.

I fully endorse the progressive and positive views expressed by Toufic. Most broad-minded people in Lebanon and elsewhere are interested in living in peace with Israel but those who are guided by the Saudi religion say no. Their attitudes, temperament and outlook are warped by this violent religion. The earlier they break the shackles of this religion, the better for everyone in the Middle East. But unfortunately most people in the Arab and Muslim nations are guided by this man-made religion which is not a solution but a problem. They are using the religion to perpetuate the conflict and serve their nefarious ends. May God bless the people of the Middle East, not the unelected and unelectable leaders, monarchs,et al.

Well, once upon a time King Hussain was drinking wine in a Paris night club. When he clapped after a performance of a dancer she came to him to show him her Israeli passport. He autographed it. When there were some complaints back home he said: "In Paris it was a matter of French wine, in Jordan it is a matter of the river of Jordan". (no additional comment)

Just when one didn't think the Arab mind couldn't get any smaller, it does.

Johanna Fakhri performed on stage in France with an Israeli band and band is belongs to the criminal+spy group, they are showing the world that Israel always want peace, i mean opposite) and they are using this Lebanese belly dancer like a dance club prostitute (strite arabian prostitute) Israeli band using her, i thinks your donky arabian lawmaker who does not have a any political knowledge, if saudi arab will stop his oil supply to west and stop puppet support to his master then all kind of arab problem will sort out within 48 hours so its clear that saudi arab is a main culprit who support the west to destroy the rest of the muslim and arab country were suffering, do you know why this incident i mean isreali band performing recently because france troops been struck with road site bomb in last weeks, that's why they were arranging these kind of programs, there is two reasons+ one more reason, so you guys think about it what was going on politicaly in lebanon,

Wow. So she danced with an Israeli band. I d'ont agree with the way the Palestinians are humiliated in their own land. But come on. These people are people and if we have more of this openness then we will start to see each other as exactly that. Dwelling on misery leads to misery.
