Two killed, 9 wounded in motorcycle, other road accidents

BEIRUT: Two men, including a teen, are dead after a Tuesday morning motorcycle accident in Beirut, a security source told The Daily Star.

Sarmad Yacoub Youssef, 17, and his passenger, 22-year-old Bonik George Eliya, died after a driver car hit them on the Mar Takla road in the Jdiedeh neighborhood, east of Beirut, he said.

Following the crash, Rania Amin Najjar handed herself over to police.

In a separate incident, nine people were injured, some seriously, in a tragic car accident on the Beirut-Damascus highway early Tuesday, according to the same source.

He said the accident involved three vehicles – a Nissan, Kia and Golf that were driven by George Kamal al-Bustani, Rabih Ali al-Jari and Issmat al-Ashkar.

Separately, a Nissan skidded out of control to land in Beirut River. The driver, Klara Tanious Tannouri, was taken to hospital where she is reported to be in a stable condition.

For some obscure reason, motorcycle drivers in Lebanon seem to be completely oblivious to driving rules and regulations. They seem to pay no heed to traffic lights or the correct direction of traffic. They invade the side-walks and start honking for pedestrians to get out of their way. For now, they are a menace on wheels. The worst part is that they do all that in the presence of a police officer, and he in turn does absolutely nothing about it. Perhaps it is time for our government to do something about this!
