Syrian guards arrest 2 Lebanese crossing border

BEIRUT: Syrian authorities arrested two Lebanese farmers living in Syria when they attempted to illegally cross the border into Lebanon Monday night, residents of northern town of Wadi Khaled said.

The National News Agency reported that the two men, Hasan Tehho and Motaz al-Hussein attempted to cross the border on motorcycles.

Residents also told The Daily Star that shots were fired on the Lebanon-Syria border at around 8:30 p.m. at the outskirts of the northern village of Knaisseh.

Reports about arms being smuggled to Syria have been widely popular in the media ever since the outbreak of the unrest in Syria in mid-March.

A security source had told The Daily Star that such reports could not be verified since they have taken place within Syrian territories, but added that the Lebanese Army intelligence services and border police have uncovered a “very limited number of smuggling attempts and arrested individuals involved.
