SIDON/BEIRUT: Arson is suspected in two fires, one in a school bus and the other in a store, in Sidon Tuesday night and Wednesday morning, as investigators continue to look for clues in the case of four cars that were set ablaze Sunday.
In light of the recent fires, security officials in south Lebanon convened at Sidon’s Serail to discuss the developments and devise a security plan to confront them. Sidon Mayor Mohammad Saudi, along with security and army heads, attended the meeting which was headed by south Lebanon’s Governor Nicolas Abu Daher.
According to sources, officials discussed ideas to preserve security and stability in the city and put into effect a comprehensive security plan, which included an increase in police patrols.
Investigators still have no leads in Sunday’s incidents, when four vehicles were set ablaze in different neighborhoods of Sidon in the same way.
Meanwhile a school bus parked near a local school was partially consumed by fire Tuesday night and a car-battery store burned down completely Wednesday morning after someone threw a lit piece of cardboard coated with flammable substances under the door.
Separately, in the Baabda town of Hadath, two armed masked men robbed a pharmacy, the National News Agency reported.
According to the NNA, armed and masked men entered Farma Saad Pharmacy located near the Antonine University in Hadath and robbed its owner, Rola Saad, at gunpoint. Saad handed over the cash to one of the thieves while the other took her purse.
Saad said the two men fled in a car toward Shoueifat and gave the police a description of them, stating that they had Lebanese accents.
Meanwhile, a 1977 dark green Mercedes-Benz, license plate number J/353880, was stolen in Shoueifat. The car was parked near the home of its owner, Hisham Qassem. Elsewhere, in the town of Zahle, a 1995 Renault Rapid was also stolen.
