BEIRUT: Residents in north Bekaa blocked the Baalbek-Homs highway early Wednesday morning to protest rising fuel prices, the National News Agency reported.
According to the NNA, the road was blocked with burning tires for around three hours in both directions at the entrance of the Baalbek village of Younin.
According to a statement issued by Internal Security Forces, police re-opened the road at 10 a.m. while Civil Defense personnel worked to put out the burning tires.
The protest was the latest in a string of demonstrations in the region over the past two weeks. Parliament’s Public Works, Transport, Energy and Water Committee pledged Tuesday to introduce subsidies for heating oil.
