Lebanese Miss USA in jail over drunk driving

BEIRUT: The former Miss USA, Lebanese immigrant Rima Fakih, was arrested for drunk driving over the weekend, according to local media in Dearborn, Michigan.

The 26-year-old, who won the pageant in 2010, was pulled over early Saturday morning and her alcohol level was over twice the legal limit, according to The Examiner newspaper.

She was detained until Sunday afternoon, the paper added. Fakih initially denied she had been arrested on Twitter, saying “Let’s clear things up now ... I’m NOT in Michigan and I’m NOT in jail! Wrong Fakih.”

That tweet has since been removed and her attorney, Doraid Elder told the Detroit Free Press that “unfortunately she was,” adding that Fakih is “very saddened and very apologetic for the situation that she is in right now.”

Fakih was born in Srifa, in south Lebanon. She is the first Muslim woman to have won the Miss USA beauty contest.
