BEIRUT: Teachers warned Monday that they will strike and hold demonstrations within two weeks if the Cabinet does not pass a draft law to raise salaries in its session Wednesday.
The announcement was made during a meeting of the Union Coordinating Committee, which includes representatives of public schools and public sector employees who are not part of the General Labor Confederation, at the headquarters of the Private Teachers Association.
A statement by the attendees called on teachers to hold a general assembly throughout Lebanon Wednesday while the Cabinet convenes.
The gatherings aim to communicate to the Cabinet a number of demands including: “The adjusting of salaries in the public and private sector by introducing a 60 percent increase in the first bracket, 40 percent on the second and 20 percent on the third,” said the statement.
The teachers also called for health coverage to be paid by the state.
