BEIRUT: Lebanese authorities have seized a large number of contraband cigarettes, an official statement said Friday.
A statement issued by Customs at Beirut's Rafik Hariri International Airport said the shipment, containing 12,000 cigarette cartons of the brand “UNITED” and smuggled from Dubai, UAE, was confiscated on Thursday.
It said the shipment would have been worth an estimated LL117 million ($78,000) in taxes.
“The shipment has been seized and an investigation was opened to determine the circumstances surrounding the smuggling and arrest those involved,” the statement added.
