BEIRUT: Lebanese are among the world’s most nocturnal crowd, with Beirut ranking third as one of the cities that never sleep, preceded by Cairo and Montevideo, according to an online study.

The results, highlighted in a study by social network Badoo.com, were drawn out of an analysis into the online habits in 180 countries, particularly users using online chat services. One hundred and twenty million chat sessions were sampled in the study.

Cairo, the leader of the pack, peaked with an average number of people chatting online until nearly 1 a.m.

Surprisingly, places traditionally thought of as 24-hour cities ranked rather low in the listing, with London at 17, Paris 18 and New York ranking a “humiliating” 32nd.

“This will confirm the fears of those who say that New York has grown sterile and sleepy,” said Lloyd Price, Badoo’s director of marketing, Reuters reported. “Some will call it a humiliation.”

Montevideo was one among six Spanish cities to be included in the top-10 list.

Price also said that the chart was an indication of how much people go out and stay out late.

According to the online ranking service Alexa Internet, Badoo.com ranks as the 150th most popular website on the world wide web.

Unfortunately, the data from that study is meaningless in general terms. People's habits online are very different from their real-life activities. So comparing Beirut or Cairo to New York or Paris is not meaningful in general, because it reflects more on internet culture than real-life. It might just mean that there are fewer opportunities in Beirut and Cairo to meet in the open during daylight for certain subjects, and so late-night chatting is the only useful substitute. On the whole, not a convincing argument. New York can rest easy - or can it?

well that is nothing to be proud off! two main reasons that people are staying up, that this study did not refer to are: 1, unemployment, 2: depression because nothing else to do with their time. So they stay up all night, and sleep all day to escape reality. It has nothing to do with love of life is a big party!!!

I guess that staying up this late is an indicator of how bad our economy is. Staying awake all night means that night lovers spend their time at a restaurant, bar or lounge and sleep all day. This also means that Lebanon's fragile economy is now based more and more on the F&B industry; a fragile one that fluctuates with the weather. Lebanon is becoming like a big night club. Are you proud?
