Up to seven killed, 14 wounded in fuel tank blast near Beirut
BEIRUT: Up to seven people were killed and 14 wounded when a fuel tank blew up at a gas station near Beirut Monday evening.

The explosion caused extensive damage to the surrounding area, including a large fire and shattered glass at local residences. It reportedly happened while gas station workers were welding a tank. Among the dead is the station owner, Joseph Abi Nasr, and foreign workers.

Ambulances rushed to the scene of the explosion near the gas station in the Fiat Bridge area near Achrafieh, the source said.

A Red Cross official told the Daily Star that four people were confirmed dead with three others missing.

Tomorrow this kind of accidents can happen again....with more people killed and more damage on buildings and infrastructure...but Lebanon is going on for having its own oil and gas industry .. without any knowledge about these issues.
Safety, environment, good management and etc, are more important then making money only.
I realy hope that the people who are responsible for this accident will be punished....asap.

Welding a gas tank that has gas in it? This sounds like natural selection where the evolutionary process removes dumbasses from the genetic pool.

I bet my last dollar that it was the owner's fault, may God have mercy on his soul. I know how Lebanese people think, I myself am Lebanese. I am often at odds with my fellow Lebanese about safety issues. I visit Lebanon every year and every year I argue with my friends about safety, "they always say hey they have been doing this for years" I am sure the late owner of the station thought the same way, with total disregard to safety, I mean think about welding? In an active gas station? the man was asking for it. Once again may God have mercy on his soul and the rest of poor workers that died as well.

@ Dirk Silvis: If Lebanon wasn't becoming more and more aware of the safety of their country and people, the agriculture minister wouldn't have banned all vegetable products from Europe last week, and we wouldn't have had one of the most keen armies/powerful intelligence branches at least in the region.. These are slight examples.

It's sad that such an accident cost the lives of 7. Hopefully these sort of sudden accidents don't occur again.

I hope they rest in peace. It is a tragedy. Now I hope these "politicians" would quit bickering and get down to real work. I think the country is sick of these overpaid, good-for-nothing losers. It's like everyone forgot that the responsibility of the government is to run the country and ensure a better and safer life for all citizens, and not to generate material for news reports and newspaper articles.
