A dog’s day at Beirut’s Hippodrome
BEIRUT: The fourth annual BETA Spring Dog Festival culminated with a dog show over the weekend, when the Beirut Hippodrome was filled with hundreds of dogs and their owners, entering into a wide range of categories.

Entrants paid a $10 fee to enter their pet into each category – from “Best dressed,” to “Most obedient” and “Best lookalike” (as compared to the dog’s owner) – helping raise money for the animal welfare charity BETA.

Beirut for the Ethical Treatment of Animals “rescues animals in life-threatening or dangerous situations. Unfortunately we don’t have the resources at the moment to help every stray animal on the street although we wish we could,” explained MacKenzie Lewis, the welfare charity’s communications officer.

Saturday was the third and final day of the festival, with live music and events for kids running at the Hippodrome, one of Beirut’s only green spaces, since Thursday.

As well as raising much needed funds, the open-air festival was also aimed at recruiting new members to BETA – there are currently around 360.

Nathalie Semaan, a BETA member, said she loves the dog festival as, “Normally we see very horrible things, so it’s great to have a day which is just about celebrating dogs.”

She referred to the many rescues BETA has been involved in, including a recent one in south Lebanon.

“We had a call to say that a dog had been shot in the head, but we found him and took him to our shelter,” she said. Kratos was then adopted by a woman in the U.S. and last month moved to his permanent home there.

Semaan, who is Lebanese but grew up abroad, joined BETA after she moved to Lebanon and saw how badly animals were often treated.

“I started rescuing dogs independently at first and then joined BETA. I wasn’t going to sit quietly any more and just watch what was happening to dogs here.”

The BETA shelter in Mansourieh has around 250 dogs, all looking for homes, and some of the animals entered into different categories of Saturday’s dog show.

Aida, disabled from the waist down, is a shelter dog, and won the “Best Disabled” dog category to huge applause.

The lack of large open spaces in Beirut makes it hard to own a dog in the city. The dog festival was designed as a rare opportunity for dog owners to get together and enjoy their pets.

“In Beirut you don’t really see people walking their dogs anywhere so it’s great to see people all together,” Lewis said. “The dog show is just a great opportunity to introduce people to the work that we do at BETA.”

Annich and Kamal Nassar, the proud owners of Peewee, a 12-year-old American cocker spaniel entered into the “Best senior” category, had attended the festival on both Friday and Saturday.

“We’re here for Peewee to enjoy himself. Where we live in Sin al-Fil there are spaces to walk him, but it’s a great atmosphere here and it’s nice to see so many other dogs.”

Jasmine Karam, 12, only joined BETA in the last month, but she rescued her first dog last year.

Walking home one day with her mother they saw a dog being abandoned; he was dropped off on the side of the road as his owner drove away.

“He ran after the car, he didn’t want to be abandoned.”

Not quite sure of his breed, Jasmine thinks he is a German Shepherd mix. They have called him Lucky, as he has only brought luck into their lives since they found him. The family have also rescued two puppies that they found abandoned, but they were deemed too boisterous for the dog show.

Lucky entered into the “Friendliest dog” category.

As the MC of the dog show said, “This is the only place in the country right now where you can have a good day with your dog and not have a hard time about it.”

I know the story of Kratos, he was rescued by a our friend Hussein in Saida, he found him and called for help! Then only 2 ladies of beta Mireille and Rima drove to get him to Beirut. Much later he was adopted in the states. It is not fair that the man who really rescued him gets no credit, he works hard alone and rescues without much help or money and beta took in a lot of donations for Kratos and did not offer to help him or to mention him again. Please have all facts first before publishing. This Natalie was not involved in his rescue. People like to take credit for others work and keep cashing in.

Dear Yasmine,
I'm one of the 2 ladies who went to the South to pick up Kratos, the day he was shot! And I agree with you... Without Hussein, Kratos would be dead for sure!
But it seems you missed a few facts: On February 15th (not sure about the date), BETA went to the South and spayed all Hussein's dogs... about 17.
So claiming that BETA never helped him again is not true! Gathering a team of people to catch all Hussein's dogs and asking a vet to go all the way to the South took a lot of effort and time. And guess what? He didn't pay a penny!
"BETA took in a lot of donations for Kratos?" Can you please clarify this? Where did you get your facts from?

Hi Yasmine,

Thank you for your concern for Kratos! You can follow his story and how BETA rescued him, funded his rehabilitation and the flight to his new home (which we also arranged) here on our site: http://www.betalebanon.org/n_news.asp?news_id=398

We're grateful for all of our donations, which go directly to helping animals. If you have any other questions, we're happy to answer them at contact@betalebanon.org.

Best wishes,

The BETA Team

Dear Yasime,
I doubt that you truly know Hussein because i do and i know for a fact that he loves and adores and APPRECIATES everything BETA has done is doing and will do to help his shelter in the Saida.
If it wasn’t for Hussein Kratos would have died alone on the streets and very slow and painful death but if it wasn’t for the help of BETA who actually rushed in the middle of the night to pick him up take him to the vet pay all his expenses give him the love and medication and support he needed to get back on his feet then Kratos would have died as well the effort that Michel and the BETA team did was unbelievable and his new home in the states is because of BETA.
So i personally thank not only Hussein but every single person who supported Kratos financially and morally.
P.s BETA has over 250 dogs that’s beside the street dogs they feed help spay and neuter, to feed groom shower vaccinate spay and neuter and much more, CASH IN yes they need more CASH for they don’t have 5 dogs and 5 kittens to take care of and I’m sure you have no idea how much money it takes to take care of a REAL shelter.
Regards
Nada

Dear all who kindly replied,

@Rima, I know Houssein's work and all his little earnings go for the dogs, so you can't expect him to pay more than that. He is a poor man with a big heart for animals, I believe you shouldn't even think of asking him for money for what Beta did, am happy Beta team spayed all the dogs, I saw the photos, but it was a campaign in Lebanon, so not only his dogs got spayed.
@ Nada, I know the work of a real shelter, no kill shelters, and I appreciate more than you think the work any animal group does in Lebanon after seeing all the atrocities towards the animals here. More shelters are needed and more dedicated people.
I follow all stories of rescues and see and feel sometimes there is too much propaganda.
@ Beta, You guys are doing a great job out there, selflessly rescuing and fostering, amounts of medical expenses etc. but you didnt acknowledge the case of Hussein's part in the Kratos story, so many people were praised for doing this miracle, he was left out, that disturbed me a bit. I loved the dog show, Beirut needs more such events, they raise awareness that there is an animal world out there too. Please keep it up!

Dear Yasmine,

it would be great it you start applying yourself the advise you are giving to the daily star team : " Please have all facts first before publishing" . I kindly advise you to apply it before writing, I am sure you know that when you are giving facts you should be sure and have what supports your words. Going from there any small word or story a person can tell may have legal implications.
Also i advise you to check all the work and help that have been provided to mr. Hussein, because I checked and I realized that what you are saying is not the truth. Unfortunately. Good luck with more false information just for the purpose of writing.

best

Dear Rita,
Don't accuse me of giving wrong information, I will forward this to Hussein and let him reply if needed. My best to you too.
Rima Barakat June 13, 2011 05:16 PM
@Yasmine,
Once again, get your facts straight; The campaign all over Lebanon that you're talking about took place last year, February 10, where the BETA team spent the whole month doing TNR.
This February 15th, the team went to Hussein's land in the South and it's not in Saida!

If you really knew Hussein, you would know that he helps animals out of pure love and passion and not for the recognition... This is how real animal lovers work! They help and never ask for anything in return!

No one asked him to pay... You seem to jump to conclusions as you please just to prove your point... which is not correct.

P.S. You still haven't answered my question. Where did you get your facts from?
Karl Haddad June 13, 2011 05:37 PM
I am happy to see animal oriented events in Lebanon. Thank you BETA for the initiative
As for the lady who first initiated the criticism, from a lawyer point of view, I can assume that her public statements on the internet are a serious defamation case against a Lebanese NGO and I assume this is why she didn’t mention her family name. But I’m sure there are legal ways to follow on these matters.

Thank you for all who help animals!
Nathalie Semaan June 13, 2011 07:19 PM
My brother and Rima both sent me this article today and I was shocked! First off the lady who spoke to me, got her story wrong. I said to her that a BETA volunteer was involved in the rescue of Kratos, I never mentioned that I was involved. She also got the country that I grew up in wrong and the year I moved here too....Anyway that is not the point of this post.

Yasmine yes if it wasn't for Hussein, Kratos would be dead, and if it wasn't for BETA, Kratos would be dead and if it wasn't for the hundreds of people who financially and morally supported kratos, he would be dead too...nobody ever left Hussein out of the picture. I mentioned him when she asked, but she obviously did not mention him either (I gave no names when she spoke to me), what I did say was BETA received a call from a man who helps animals in the south and a BETA volunteer was involved in his rescue. Instead of arguing how about just being happy that Kratos is alive, well and happy thanks to EVERYONE who was involved.

@MARIA AKA YASMINE and all the rest have a beautiful evening girls and Guys.
Sandy June 17, 2011 03:05 PM

I admire what BETA and others do in Lebanon for the animals and know how HARD is their job. But personally, i would never visit BETA's shelter again, i have visited previously and i think it's a bad place to leave the dogs (dirty, small, overcrowded, dogs don't get enough attention, understaffed, etc...) i think Lebanese should financially help BETA to improve their shelter.
As for Kratos.... he is healthy and happy.... who cares who gets the credit??!?!?!

Nathalie Semaan June 22, 2011 06:21 AM

@Sandy: If we were properly funded the shelter would look different. Regardless of how it looks, the dogs are extremely happy, it may be dirty but it's the only shelter in Lebanon, and honestly it is far safer than the streets! If you have visited the shelter (and if you have also seen the abuse happening on the streets) then you would know that even if it is dirty, understaffed and overcrowded...it is the ONLY shelter in Lebanon for the dogs to call home..and they love it! Trust me the dogs get all the attention...each and every one of them :)
