BEIRUT: An anti-drug police unit came under fire and rocket attack Monday during the destruction of cannabis fields in east Lebanon’s city of Baalbek, a security source said.
Five rocket-propelled grenades were fired in the direction of the field, according to the source, destroying two civilian cars, one of which belonged to an LBC television correspondent.
The source told The Daily Star that no police were hurt in the 9 a.m. shoot-out which took place in the Boudai Plain on the outskirts of Baalbek.
The head of the Office of Drug Control, Col. Adel Mashmoushi, said the destruction of cannabis fields will continue and vowed to arrest those involved in the shooting.
