BEIRUT: Students at the American Community School were evacuated safely after a small fire erupted at one of the school’s buildings, ACS said Thursday, adding that several staff members had been injured while trying to put out the fire.
In a statement addressed to parents, ACS said five members of staff who were investigating and trying to put out the fire had suffered smoke inhalation. The employees were treated at the school by staff nurses and later transported to a hospital. Three of the injured have already been released from hospital, ACS said, adding that two remain under observation and treatment.
ACS said the fire had started at around 1.30 p.m. in an unoccupied room of the school’s BD building which houses facilities including the main administration, high school classes, fifth-grade classrooms, day care, and headmaster’s apartment.
Founded in 1905, ACS is accredited in the United States, licensed in Lebanon and serves more than 1,000 students.
