BEIRUT: Two Lebanese prisoners, one described as dangerous, were treated Wednesday after deliberately harming themselves in their jail cell in a police station in Batroun, north Lebanon.
A security source told The Daily Star Tony al-Hajj, who is serving a life sentence, and Fawzi Shahrour, a dangerous prisoner who played a key role in several riots at the notorious Roumieh prison, harmed themselves using sharp tools.
The commander of the Batroun police station, Maj. Michel Abu Antoun, said the two inmates were doing well after being treated in their cells.
He said security measures were beefed up at the Batroun prison following the incident Wednesday morning.
The security source said Hajj has been repeatedly demanding he be moved to a prison in his hometown Baalbek, in east Lebanon.
Shahrour, who has not yet been convicted, wants a state pardon, the source added.
Both inmates had been moved from Roumieh prison for disciplinary reasons.
