TRIPOLI, Lebanon: Sunday’s rally was marred by the death of a teenager in a road accident in Akkar, which required a heavy army deployment to head off sectarian tension.
The National News Agency identified the victim as Mustafa Hasan, 16.
Security sources told The Daily Star that the incident was sparked when people from the Sunni village of Tal Hmeira headed for the rally in the morning, and their path was blocked by residents of Tal Hayat, an Alawite village, as a scuffle broke out. Security sources said that when individuals from Tel Hmeira arrived later to join the fray, one of their vehicles ran over Hasan, from Tal Hayat, who died from his injuries Sunday evening.
