SIDON, Lebanon: The Lebanese Army defused an explosive device near the Ain al-Hilweh Palestinian refugee camp in Sidon, while police were investigating a hand grenade that exploded in Tripoli over the weekend, injuring three people.
The army defused an explosive outside a juice shop near Ain al-Hilweh Sunday. The incident was the third of its kind in the Ain al-Hilweh neighborhood of Taamir since the army was deployed in the area in 2007. Taamir is adjacent to the refugee camp, which lies on the outskirts of the southern city of Sidon.
Army explosives experts dismantled the device, consisting of a bomb connected to two batteries, a detonator and a timer, which was not set to explode. Army Intelligence opened investigations into the incident.
The juice shop’s owners, Mohammad and Saad Mallah, had spent two and a half years in prison for belonging to the Islamist group Jund al-Sham, which has a presence in Ain al-Hilweh.
The two, both in their 20s, were released in 2010 and are not currently affiliated with any political group. Their elder brother, Fadel, was found dead five years ago in the trunk of his car near the shop in Taamir while it was still under the control of Jund al-Sham.
The area around the shop, some 100 meters from the army checkpoint and 200m from the entrance of the camp, was evacuated while the army defused the device, and has since reopened.
Jund al-Sham, which was established in 2004, had clashed with army personnel on several occasions.
Separately, three people were wounded Saturday after a man threw a hand grenade in the Tripoli neighborhood of Bab al-Tabbaneh, security sources said.
