BEIRUT: A U.N. office was evacuated after a bomb threat Monday, but authorities later determined that it had been a false alarm.
Bahaa al-Koussy, director of the U.N. Information Center in Beirut, told The Daily Star that a man entered the Gefinor Center on Clemenceau Street in Beirut at 1:45 p.m. and threw leaflets into the office of UNICEF.
“There will be an explosion,” read the flier, in handwritten Arabic.
The man threw the box which had contained the leaflets into the office of the International Organization for Migration, which is in the same building.
“UNICEF employees informed the U.N. Security and Service [personnel] about the matter and they were ordered to evacuate the office,” Koussy said. IOM staff evacuated their office as well.
The U.N official said that UNSS personnel contacted the Internal Security Forces who arrived to the scene along with investigators and explosive experts who searched the offices. No explosive materials were found and the building was declared safe at 6:30 p.m. and will reopen Wednesday. The ISF is pursuing the culprit who has been identified, added Koussy.
