BEIRUT: Residents of the southern suburbs of Beirut celebrated Thursday reports claiming Libyan leader Moammar Gadhafi had been captured and killed in his hometown of Sirte.
Celebratory gunfire could be heard throughout the southern suburbs. Shots and the firework could also be heard in various parts of the Lebanese capital.
Internal Security Forces confirmed that no injuries had been reported.
Several officials from the National Transitional Council told Reuters that Gadhafi died of wounds suffered in his capture in Sirte, which was taken over by Libyan rebel fighters earlier in the day.
The official added that the deposed leader was hit in the head but there was no independent confirmation of the remarks.
