BEIRUT: A Lebanese-Canadian woman was charged Thursday with attempting to smuggle weapons parts into Lebanon and faces a maximum of 10 years in prison, the Globe and Mail reported.
The woman, 26, is reportedly an outspoken activist who has criticized Canada's foreign policy in the Middle East and voiced her sympathy with Hezbollah during the 2006-war between Lebanon and Israel, the Canadian paper said.
“Diab said the Canadian government reacted slowly to the crisis [2006 war], and she described its support of Israel in the matter as ‘shameful’” Diab told fellow Canadian paper Le Devoir, according to the Globe and Mail.
The accused has also slammed the intervention of NATO forces in the Libya, in which Canadian warplanes have participated, in support of rebel forces earlier this year.
The paper reported that Diab was arrested at Montreal’s Pierre Elliott Trudeau International Airport on May 19 with weapons parts in her luggage before she boarded a flight to Lebanon.
“We are talking about AR-15 assault rifles,” Corporal Luc Thibault told the Globe and Mail.
