BEIRUT: Shells from the Syrian side of the border hit three north Lebanon towns Thursday night, a Lebanese security source told The Daily Star Friday, but no damage was reported.

Shells ranging in size from 82 to 120 millimeters fell on Al-Bireh, Al-Sindiyana, and Khirbit Dawoud in the northern Akkar region, located about six kilometers from Lebanon’s northern border with Syria.

Earlier Thursday, Syrian shelling wounded two Lebanese near the border in the north at dawn. Khirbit Dawoud alone was hit by seven artillery shells, causing panic among local residents and prompting many of them to leave their homes for safer areas.

Mahmoud Abdel-Majeed, the head of Khirbit Dawoud municipality, called on the Lebanese government Thursday “to shoulder its responsibility concerning the big dangers arising from such violations.” He also urged the government to instruct the Lebanese Army to protect citizens from “repeated [Syrian] attacks.”
