Pedestrian fatally hit by car while crossing highway

BEIRUT: A man died Tuesday morning while crossing the Beirut-Jbeil highway on foot, security sources told The Daily Star.

The man was identified as retired First Adjutant Toufic Azzi.

Azzi, who was crossing the western side of the Halat portion of the highway, was hit by a Mercedes M.L. driven by Nassim Ghantous and died instantly. Ghantous and his wife Jamila were also injured, and transferred to a local hospital for treatment.

The accident caused severe traffic on the Beirut-Jbeil highway.
