BEIRUT: The British Ambassador to Lebanon called for calm following a meeting with Parliament Speaker Nabih Berri Thursday in which he discussed recent national developments.

The British Embassy's press office released a statement from Ambassador Tom Fletcher in which he called for calm and unity while "Lebanon is facing a period of regional change and uncertainty."

Fletcher said that the international community is supporting the Lebanese Army by providing resources to assist Lebanon in dealing with "the refugee influx" in the nation.

He added, "It is important that no country takes any action that could bring instability to Lebanon" and stressed that the current Lebanese leadership strive to rely on "dialogue rather than confrontation."

In regards to the role of the media, Fletcher expressed his hope that it would "assess developments in a calm, factual and measured way."

The statement concluded with Fletcher stressing the maintenance of order in Lebanon.

"Lebanon should base itself on the rule of law, not the law of the gun.”
