BEIRUT: The Belgian Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for Foreign Affairs Didier Reynders stressed Wednesday the importance of preventing the crisis in Syrian spilling over into Lebanon, on a visit to the country, according to the National News Agency.
“We will support everything that can be done in the coming days and weeks to resolve the Syrian crisis, without this having any negative repercussions on the situation in Lebanon,” he said.
He also stressed the “importance of continuing cooperation with the U.N. Security Council on the Special Tribunal for Lebanon during the next three years.” The STL is investigating the 2005 assassination of former Prime Minister Rafik Hariri.
Reynders met with Lebanese officials Wednesday, including President Michel Sleiman with whom he discussed bilateral relations.
Prime Minister Najib Mikati also received Reynders Wednesday.
After the meeting Reynders thanked Mikati for his time and said that both reiterated their determination to increase dialogue between Lebanon and the EU.
