BEIRUT: Interior Minister Marwan Charbel said Monday that he would put two rooms in the prison under the disposal of the Social Affairs Ministry, adding that a court room would be inaugurated soon in the prison.
Speaking to reporters after touring the central Roumieh prison with Social Affairs Minister Wael Abu Faour, Charbel said that a courtroom would be opened in the prison within three to four months to hasten trials.
The step is expected to reduce chronic crowding, which is believed to be among the main causes of last year’s uprising in the prison that killed at least four inmates and injured nearly 10 others.
For his part, Abu Faour said he became convinced of the need to open an office for his ministry in Roumieh prison.
“The Social Affairs Ministry would task this center with carrying out several missions like rehabilitating and taking care of disabled inmates who are not receiving enough care,” said the social affairs minister.
The center would also enhance training programs for detainees that aim at combating illiteracy, according to Abu Faour.
