Politician fifth suspect in Hariri assassination: report

BEIRUT: A politician will likely be included in a revised draft indictment by Special Tribunal for Lebanon Prosecutor Daniel Bellemare, Lebanon's Al-Liwaa newspaper Tuesday quoted diplomatic sources as saying.

An international judicial source confirmed to the local daily that Bellemare would issue a revised indictment. The source added that there would be several others included in the new indictment.

In June 2011, Bellemare indicted four member of Hezbollah – Mustafa Amine Badreddine, Salim Jamil Ayyash, Hussein Hasan Oneissi and Assad Hasan Sabra – in the assassination of former Prime Minister Rafik Hariri in 2005. The resistance group denies any involvement in the crime.

The report comes days after Al-Akhbar reported that Bellemare had submitted a new draft indictment in the attempted assassinations of former Deputy Prime Minister Elias Murr and MP Marwan Hamdeh and in the assassination of former Communist Party leader George Hawi.

It also said Bellemare had submitted additional documents related to the indictment in the case of Hariri’s assassination on Feb. 14, 2005.

Last week Prime Minister Najib Mikati said the STL prosecutor would issue a new indictment in the assassination of Hariri.
