BEIRUT: Former Deputy Speaker Elie Ferzli said Tuesday that the Lebanese should hold a national dialogue to reach agreement on a new electoral law, adding that it was unacceptable to hold parliamentary elections based on the present district-based law.
Speaking to reporters following a meeting with Speaker Nabih Berri, Ferzli said that by holding elections based on the current law the government would be completely disregarding the Constitution and the proper representation of Christians in the country.
“We need to formulate a new electoral law that stresses on equality between the Lebanese and the principle of effective representation,” said Ferzli, who warned of leaving the issue of the electoral law as a subject to be dealt with only two months before 2013 elections.
A member within the Orthodox Gathering, Ferzli has worked on formulating a new and radical proposal for the country’s electoral law, according to which each Lebanese sect elect its own MPs in a one countrywide district.
