BEIRUT: An Ethiopian woman was killed in a hit-and-run car accident in the Beirut suburb of Baabda Wednesday night, while police are chasing suspects involved in a shooting in southern Beirut and a truck driver was robbed at gunpoint, security sources said Thursday.
The sources said Mini Chanich Fakrami, an Ethiopian woman who worked as a domestic helper, died in hospital Thursday from serious wounds suffered the night before when a speeding car hit her as she tried to cross a road in Baabda, north of Beirut, to get to a pharmacy.
In the Lailaki neighborhood on the southern outskirts of Beirut, a late Wednesday quarrel between van drivers developed into a shootout after members of the Zaaiter family stepped in, firing gunshots in the air. Two brothers were involved, along with their mother.
The security sources said police were chasing suspects with warrants for their arrest.
Separately, unknown thieves threatened Fouad Abu Dagher, the owner of a camera shop in Fanar, northeast of Beirut, at gunpoint and stole LL350,000, three cameras and his cellphone.
In Naameh, south of Beirut, armed men on two motorcycles intercepted a pickup truck and robbed Rifaat Mehdi of $3,000, his cellphone and ID.
Police were pursuing the assailants who fled toward the southern city of Sidon.
