Beirut bar cancels event inviting guests to dress as domestic workers

BEIRUT: A bar in the neighborhood of Gemmayzeh has canceled an event, originally scheduled for this Friday, which invited guests to dress up as migrant domestic workers for the chance to win $100.

Event details encouraged bar-goers to, “this Friday night, be Sinkara or Milenga ... be Soumatra or Domma ... create your own maid costume, speak like them and look like a Philippino [sic], Bengladish [sic], Sri Lanka [sic] or any maid you want and definitely win 100 U.S. dollars in cash.”

The details of the event were originally posted late Tuesday evening on the bar’s Facebook group. A Lebanese organization, the Anti-Racism Movement, then reposted the event on its blog, which soon drew much online criticism. The owner of the bar then removed all details of the event.

Speaking to The Daily Star Wednesday, the owner denied that the event was in any way racist. “You just put on a costume, it was supposed to be for fun. Some people misunderstood it and thought it was racist.”

On the emphasis on foreign nationalities in the posting, she said “We hadn’t meant it in that way at all. You didn’t have to dress as a foreigner, you could have just put on an apron and dressed as your mom.”

“We took the event down after two hours, as we realized people had misinterpreted it.”

Farah Salka, of the Anti-Racism Movement, called it one of the most shocking recent examples of racism that she has seen.

“I see examples of it all the time, but with this, I was just like ‘wow.’”

While happy that the event was removed so quickly, Salka said she was disappointed the owner had not apologized for posting it in the first place.

“I would love to buy her explanation that it was not intentionally racist, but how can it not be? When you are categorizing the 250,000 migrant domestic workers in this country as ‘them:’ Who is ‘them’?”

The event details also equated the $100 award for the best costume with the salary maids receive, writing: “They ... work all the month to get it,” but that bar-goers could claim the same amount back by “imitat[ing] them and win it in some few comedy moments.” Salka said this was “completely insensitive.”

It is time, Salka added, for a redefining of the word “racist” in Lebanon. “We need to revise the definition. Even the smallest details can be racist,” she said.

Why not name the bar? Everyone would stop going there and it'd close down in a few months. Fair result for a racist bar owner.

George January 26, 2012 01:03 PM

This is ridiculously sad. To think some Lebanese just don't know better. But worse, you'd think already marginalized people would be more tolerant; apparently LGBT people have a dark side too ...

Scoop January 26, 2012 03:50 PM

Great stuff! What was the name of the bar?

sami January 26, 2012 03:56 PM

Disgraceful!!! I think people have to learn a thing or two about discrimination and racism in Lebanon. Those poor people leave their sons and daughters to come to Lebanon to earn money and work hard, and all we do in return is treat them like slaves. I am very happy that I don't live in this environment anymore!!!! WHO DO YOU THINK YOU ARE!!!!

Calamity John January 26, 2012 04:02 PM

What's wrong with racism used in the context of a joke? Everybody is being too sensitive these days. Where's your sense of humor? I can't see any way this event could have "harmed" the foreign workers.

Fred January 26, 2012 04:44 PM

And why not an event with people dressed as stupid Lebanese, like Foufou and Joujou? It'd be very easy to organize.

Hassan Tarabai January 26, 2012 07:08 PM

The Bar Owner organized this event expecting a big number of People would be interested in such a Racist event. That reflects a deeper problem in our Lebanese society and proves that racism is widespread in our community. Our Lebanese religious leaders in Lebanon should spend less time talking politics and more talking about tolerance and Anti-Racism. Our anti-racism laws should be activated and new laws should be implemented to punish any individual or group that holds such racist events.

So much needs to be done to correct the perception of some (or many?) Lebanese people.. How can they not see what's wrong with this "party"? It's wrong on so many levels: assigning a nationality to domestic workers, how much they're paid, and making light of how little they're paid are but a few.

Bravo Anti-Racism Movement and Daily Star for your great work in bringing this to light.

Burboosh January 27, 2012 12:11 AM

Why are you not publishing the name of the disgusting person behind the event? If you want to highlight racism in our dear old country, make her an example and force her to face her shame publicly. Whatever happened to good journalism ethics?

Lady T January 27, 2012 01:09 AM

Absolutely disgusting. How shameful!

W. Z. January 27, 2012 11:15 AM

“You just put on a costume, it was supposed to be for fun. Some people misunderstood it and thought it was racist.”

If the person GENUINELY believes this then we can only conclude that we have just established a new world record, by achieving devolution (or backward evolution)! What kind of social education did this person get from her parents and peers through the years?

What a disgrace to humanity... Shame on yourself.

boycott January 27, 2012 11:27 AM

Well, I think you should all know the name of the bar... I did some research and it's called Life Bar. You can facebook it!

giovanni pagatpatan January 27, 2012 11:52 AM

Racist or not...this is not cool! We may be poorer than you but we are humans too. Treat us well and we will treat you like kings....We Filipinos are very proud of who we are and we don't discriminate against anyone. God bless!

sawwsan January 27, 2012 02:46 PM

Disgusting! Lebanon has a long way to go when it comes to respecting other people!

British January 27, 2012 05:39 PM

Truly disgusting. As a foreigner in Lebanon, this makes me feel appalled and unwelcome.

Kareem January 27, 2012 08:31 PM

So disgusting! We as Lebanese have a long way to go ... being socially "liberal" doesn’t mean having drinks and going to clubs and wearing miniskirts ... it also means racial and religious tolerance! Sometimes I am ashamed to be from there ...

moonsear January 28, 2012 06:15 PM

Shameful ... and what is more shameful are the rare supporting voices on this forum.

charbel January 28, 2012 10:52 PM

I can see that a lot of people on this forum are writing about Lebanese as if we are the most racist! I do regret that there are quite a few illiterate Lebanese around, but so it is all over the world with all nationalities.
So please do not go on attacking all the Lebanese and what irritates me is that some of you attacked "Lebanon."
Once again, I totally agree that this bar owner should be prosecuted and the mentality toward foreign employees should change as well! …
So please avoid attacking us and our country!!! Thanks!
coolkal January 31, 2012 03:29 PM

This event showed there are also good Lebanese out there who are against racism. They are the ones who stopped this stupid event. I am a Lebanese who left Lebanon a long time ago (thank God) and after many years I still find that most Lebanese do not understand the meaning of humbleness, respect and tolerance. We still have a long way to go, but out of this whole thing I do not see only the bad -- I also see there are good people in Lebanon who are against racism and who need to be more vocal and push the government to do something about it. Maids are not slaves and are just like you and me, humans who just happen to have a jobs as maids, which at the end makes them earn an honest living. Shame on the organizer and the people who supported him/her and thank you to the ones who stopped the event and the ones who supported them.
