BEIRUT: The Future Movement of former Prime Minister Saad Hariri Friday praised as a “courageous step” an open letter to the Lebanese from the opposition Syrian National Council.

In a statement, the Future Movement said it supports “the political initiative made in an open letter by the Syrian National Council.”

The Syrian Council announced Thursday that, should it come to power in Syria, it would re-evaluate agreements between Syria and Lebanon and clearly demarcate the border between the two countries as a first step toward achieving better bilateral relations.

“The Syrian National Council seeks a bright future with Lebanon ... we will review agreements signed between the two countries and reach new agreements based on the independent and common interests of both nations,” the council said in an open letter to the Lebanese posted on its official website.

The Future Movement statement said the “bold initiative taken by the Syrian National Council, which has opened a new horizon for the relationship between the two countries ... deserves praise and political support.

“The initiative puts Lebanese-Syrian relations on the right political track ... which we can build on in order to foster ties with a free Syria that takes into account the two countries’ mutual interests,” the Future Movement added.

“We are looking forward to seeing Syria governed soon by the free will of its people.”
