BEIRUT: Groups protesting the detention of a religious leader in Tripoli over the weekend have reopened most of the roads they blocked after the release of Sheikh Sheikh Abdullah al-Hussein, the National News Agency reported.
The NNA said late Saturday that all the roads, apart from Abdel-Hamid Karameh square, had been reopened after Hussein was released from detention by Lebanese Army Intelligence.
Security sources, who spoke to The Daily Star on condition of anonymity earlier Saturday, said some 300 protester gathered at the Abou Ali roundabout in the city after members of Lebanese Army Intelligence detained Hussein, believed to be a Salafist.
The protesters said they planned to carry on with their demonstration over the incident, which they described as an arbitrary act, in front of the Serail, where members of the Internal Security Forces had taken measures to prevent their approach.
