Beirut-based NGO opens sexual harassment support line

BEIRUT: Those who have experienced sexual harassment now have a support line to call to get moral support, as well as medical and legal referrals.

The Sexual Harassment Support Line in Lebanon, which opened in December, started publicizing their service this month, passing out fliers at the anti-rape march on Jan. 14 and then posting their number on the Facebook page of Nasawiya, the feminist collective that started a sexual harassment awareness campaign last spring called Adventures of Salwa.

Farah Kobaissy, coordinator of the Salwa campaign, who is fielding the calls, says that so far she has gotten only a dozen phone calls but hopes that with increased publicity, more people will come forward.

Lebanon currently has no legislation specifically against sexual harassment but Nasawiya is hoping to change the situation through a series of initiatives, including education through videos and fliers and now a support line.

The Sexual Harassment Support Line in Lebanon can be reached at 76 67 63 68.
