Church plays down controversial flyer in Akkar
A+ A-

QOBEIYAT, Lebanon: Church officials and politicians in Akkar played down the impact of a flyer dropped at a church the area, ahead of next month’s visit to the area by Maronite Patriarch Beshara Rai. Signed by the “Soldiers of the Great Prophet,” the flyer warns “infidels” and vows to fight against them, starting from Akkar. Bishop George Abu Jaoude ruled out that the flyer would stop Rai from visiting the district. “We call on the infidels to stop their blasphemy ... We will start from the infidel’s church in Akkar and we won’t stop ... this is not the end but the beginning,” read the flyer. Commenting on the flyer, Akkar MP Hadi Hobeish told The Daily Star that he was following up on the incident with the police and said the flyer was likely the work of “unserious” individual, and not a group.
