BEIRUT: A man was robbed of $35,000 at gunpoint in broad daylight Friday in Zahle, east Lebanon, security sources said.
They said four gunmen in a four wheel-drive vehicle approached Wajih Hashem as he drove his car on the main Zahle-Chtaura road. They then held him at gunpoint and took $35,000 that was in his possession.
Hashem, the owner of Hashem Supermarket in the Zahle neighborhood of Karak, had just left a money exchange shop in Chtaura when the mugging took place at 11 a.m., the sources said.
They said the circumstances of the robbery raised the possibility that Hashem was being watched prior to the theft.
