BEKAA, Lebanon: Syrian troops shot and killed a Lebanese citizen and wounded four others along the Syrian-Lebanese border early Tuesday.
Abdel-Ghani al-Jebbawi, 42, was shot and killed by the Syrian army at around 3 a.m. while he, two of his brothers and two other Lebanese men were hunting rabbits in the mountains of Ras Baalbek, some 25 kilometers north of Arsal, Baalbek, east Lebanon.
Jebbawi's two brothers and the two men accompanying them were wounded in the incident.
The high and barren mountains of Ras Baalbek lie in an un-delineated area of the common border between Lebanon and Syria.
Jebbawi will be buried in his hometown of Arsal later in the day.
In the past few months, shells from the Syrian army have hit Lebanese border towns and locals say that army troops sometimes cross the border to hunt down rebels.
In early May, Arsal Mayor Ali Houjeiri warned that “if the government is unable to protect the area and its residents, this will push the town’s people to take care of their own security.”
