U.S. envoy, Geagea discuss regional security situation
A+ A-

BEIRUT: U.S. Ambassador Maura Connelly met Friday with Lebanese Forces leader Samir Geagea to discuss the political and security situation in Lebanon and the region, according to a statement from the embassy. The two discussed “our deep concern over the destabilizing actions of Syria in Lebanon,” reiterating comments made by Connelly a day earlier, after meeting with Lebanese premier Najib Mikati. Friday’s meeting came six months after an assassination attempt against Geagea. “We condemn in the strongest terms any attempt to use assassination as a political tool. Lebanon must close the chapter of its past and bring an end to impunity for political assassinations and other politically motivated violence,” the statement added. Geagea and Connelly also discussed plans for the scheduled 2013 parliamentary elections, currently a hot topic in Lebanon. The statement added: “We also encourage Lebanon to uphold its democratic and constitutional principles and hold elections on time.”
