Ain al-Hilweh gunfight leaves seven wounded
A+ A-

SIDON, Lebanon: A Friday exchange of fire between two men in the Palestinian refugee camp of Ain al-Hilweh left seven people wounded, one of them in critical condition. Ziad Abu Naaj, known to be a former senior official in the Islamist group Fatah al-Islam, was shot in the leg during a shoot-out with Fatah member Khaled Mashour in the camp’s Saffouri neighborhood. Mamdouh Slim and Rami Qwaider, two Palestinian passersby, were also wounded. Slim is reportedly in critical condition. In retaliation for Naaj’s injury, Fatah al-Islam and the Islamist group Jund al-Sham opened fire and wounded four others. Contacts followed between the camp’s Palestinian Follow-Up Committee, the leadership of the Palestinian National Security Forces and Islamist groups. Palestinian sources told The Daily Star Mashour was arrested by the Palestinian National Security Forces on the suspicion that he fired first.
