BEIRUT: Three civilians were wounded in a local shooting Monday night in the southern coastal city of Sidon, security sources told The Daily Star.
The police immediately responded to the shooting and arrested those involved, the sources, who spoke on condition of anonymity, said Tuesday.
There were varying reports about what triggered the shooting.
While some residents said the shooting was caused by rivalry between owners of power generators in the area, the security sources said the clash broke out after a number of men harassed a group of young women.
According to the sources, employees for a local institution have repeatedly harassed a group of young women in the city which prompted the residents Tuesday to block roads with burning tires.
The police were able to convince the residents, who had called for the institution to be closed, to re-open the roads.
