BEIRUT: A south Lebanon public prosecutor filed a lawsuit Tuesday against unknown assailants on charges of trying to assassinate Free Patriotic Leader MP Michel Aoun, security sources told The Daily Star.

The charges, filed by Judge Samih Hajj, include attempted murder and opening fire on the decoy convoy of Aoun, the sources said.

They added that the file was referred to Sidon's Examining Magistrate Mounif Barakat to conduct the necessary investigation.

A month ago, the FPM leader said he was the target of an assassination attempt, after a shot was fired at a vehicle belonging to one of two decoy convoys accompanying Aoun during his return trip from Jezzine, south Lebanon.

Aoun headed to Jezzine earlier in the day in three convoys, two of which were decoys. The three convoys took separate routes during the voyage to and from Jezzine.
