Army detains 3 after discovering southeast Lebanon arms cache

BEIRUT: Three people were detained after an arms cache was found on the outskirts of a town in southeast Lebanon, the Lebanese Army said Wednesday.

In a statement, the Army said troops raided the suspected cache outside Bireh in the southeastern district of Rashaya Tuesday night.

“Quantities of lightweight military rifles, hand grenades, ammunition, military gear and communications equipment were found" during the raid, the statement added.

It said the raid was carried out after the Army's Intelligence Directorate received reports of a weapons cache in the area.

The Army also said that it subsequently detained three people on suspicion of being linked to the cache, and confiscated their motorcycles. They have since been referred to the appropriate authorities.
