Tripoli protesters demand probe into Beirut death

TRIPOLI, Lebanon: Friends and relatives of a young man who died under mysterious circumstances last week demonstrated in Tripoli Tuesday, demanding an investigation to reveal the truth behind his death.

According to police reports Samer Kanj, a 33-year-old resident of Tripoli, died after falling from the fifth floor of a building in one of Beirut’s southern suburbs.

A number of his relatives and friends marched from Azmi Street to Abdulhamid Karami Square, holding pictures of Kanj and banners demanding to know the circumstances behind his death.

Sources close to the family told The Daily Star that the victim received several threats recently from a person that Kanj mentioned by name and phone number on his Facebook page, prior to meeting with him.

The family was notified of the death by one of the police stations in Beirut’s southern suburbs, which told them Kanj was installing satellite wires before falling to his death.
