BEIRUT: Caretaker Defense Minister Fayez Ghosn approved Wednesday a decree delaying the discharge of Brig. Gen. Edmond Fadel, head of the Army’s intelligence directorate, the National News Agency reported.

The decree, which would add six months to Fadel’s term, has been signed by Army Commander Gen. Jean Kahwagi.

The decision to delay Fadel's discharge, whose set to retire Friday, would not need the approval of the Cabinet or the prime minister.

Caretaker Prime Minister Najib Mikati resigned last month, after ministers allied with the Hezbollah-lead March 8 coalition blocked a proposal to extend the term of Police chief Maj. Gen. Ashraf Rifi.

Rifi handed over the helm of the Internal Security Forces last week to Brig. Gen. Roger Salem.
